Europe’s westernmost capital city has one of Europe’s oldest jazz clubs: Hot Clube de Portugal, founded in 1948, has hosted legends such as Count Basie, Dizzy Gillespie, Sarah Vaughan and Dexter Gordon.

After a fire in 2009, HCP had to close doors for three years. Later, HCP  reopened doors two doors away thanks to the support of Lisbon residents and businesses and the work of the association that founded it.

Centrally located, within a short walk from Bairro Alto, the Hot Clube attracts a mixed crowd of young musos, students, and tourists. Whoever’s on the vibe is “This is good, we’d better listen.”

Why you should visit it

It’s one of the oldest jazz clubs in Europe and is considered as one of the 100 best jazz clubs in the world, by the prestigious American magazine called DownBeat.

On Tuesdays, there are jam sessions, with an invited musician who heads the lineup for the month. The concerts usually have two times: one at 10:30 pm and the other at 00:00.
