Possibly one of the greatest classics in the Lisbon dining scene, Café de São Bento has stood for decades next to the Portuguese parliament, serving some of the best steaks in town in a charming and inviting atmosphere, and open until late. It opened in 1982 with the goal of recreating the typical Portuguese café – until then almost totally gone – and serving the famous “Bife à Marrare”.

This old-school restaurant sticks to what it does best, with an almost unchanged and quite short menu, taking pride in its excellent steaks and wine selection. The “Café de São Bento” steak is known city-wide; a steak served with a unique sauce and typical french fries you won’t find anywhere else. Very popular with politicians (due to its location), it was voted “Best Steak” by Time Out Lisboa in 2014, as well as being featured in The Times on a list of “Where Top Chefs Eat Around the World”.

Also on the menu are a few salads and starters, with some surprisingly mouth-watering desserts as well. If you’re in the neighbourhood and looking for something on-the-go, the traditional toasts with french fries are one of the finest options you’ll find.
